Plastic Cover Issues
Clutch Cover Binding on Link
On some rebuilds, the SRAM clutch cover might be out of place slightly, or damaged in a way that causes it to make contact with the link while the link is rotating. The clutch cover is the plastic part that says "XX1" or "X01" or "GX". It is purely aesthetic and not necessary for proper function. This article from NSMB covers the issue in more detail.
You can correct this issue a few ways:
- Trim the clutch cover corners.
- Tighten the small screw on the back side of the clutch cover.
- Make sure the tab on the clutch cover is inserted properly. You can see if there is a gap between the clutch cover the the main clutch housing on the top of the main clutch housing. You should be able to push the tab into the slot by hand.
- Make sure the double sided tape of the clutch cover is stuck down properly. This is located under the front edge of the clutch cover.
- You can use CA glue to adhere the cover the the clutch housing. Just be careful not to get CA glue into the pivots or other moving parts.
Cracked Covers
There are 2 plastic covers. The clutch cover (see above) and cover for the derailleur button that has the "AXS" marking on it. Both covers are purely aesthetic, so you can remove them without hurting the function. However, you can also repair them by using strong adhering thin tape on the backside to keep the pieces or cracks together, and it will not be too visible from the outside if you are careful. We have even used vinyl wrap on the outside, the folded the edges over and trimmed excess. Just make sure the cover fits properly and does not interfere with any other parts.
