Jab Derailleur Compatibility
One of the main features of the Madrone Jab derailleur is its ability to be compatible with any drivetrain!
All the Jab derailleurs use the same "base" assembly. From there, the configuration options are:
- Cam type. The derailleur uses 1 cable cam, which converts shifter cable pull to cassette spacing.
- Cage type. Cage options allow us to support 1x, 2x, 3x, and and a variety of gearing ranges.
- Mounting type. There are 3 different mounting types: conventional, UDH with stiffener plate, and T-Type with stiffener plate.
- Barrel adjuster. If you are using MTB shifters, you do not need the barrel adjuster option. If you have gravel/road shifters, you do need the barrel adjuster.
- Color. We will always offer a silver and black option, as well as a couple others depending on what is popular at the time.
Let's get into the details...
Cable Cam Options
We plan to offer as many cam options as possible. We will prioritize creating cams for the most common drivetrains first, which means SRAM and Shimano 12 and 11 speed MTB, gravel, and road drivetrains (both 1x and 2x).
For less common drivetrains, such as Campagnolo, 10 speed, 9 speed, 3x, etc. we also plan to release cams, but the release may be delayed.
Also, we will have derivative cams so that we are optimized for alternate cassettes such as e13, Garbaruk or mis-matched cassettes/shifters. We will do this so you do not have to settle for less than perfect shifting. Of course, the cassette shift ramps affect shifting performance, so we cannot affect that aspect.
Cage Options
1x, 2x, 3x, and gearing range..
- The derailleur can support up to a 52T cassette cog (if you have 1x) using the long cage.
- The range of 2x gearing can be quite wide. We will have at least 1 version of a long cage and short cage. There could be 2 or more of each length that are eventually released, depending on common cassette needs.
- For most reasonable (but wide range) gravel configurations we can handle it.
Mounting Options
There are 3 mounting options...
- Conventional. The Jab can mount to any conventional or UDH derailleur hangar using the M10x1 threaded hole.
- UDH with stiffener plate. We also offer an option for an eternal plate that pairs with a UDH hangar to add strength and stiffness to the mount, similar to direct mount derailleurs. This option does not work with T-Type cassettes though (see next option).
- Modified UDH with stiffener plate (for T-Type cassettes). For T-Type cassettes, we offer a modified UDH mount and stiffening plate, adding strength and stiffness to the mount, similar to direct mount derailleurs. As an added bonus, drivetrain hackers will appreciate that our modified UDH mount will allow the use of other derailleurs with T-Type cassettes.
Barrel Adjuster
A barrel adjuster is necessary for adjustment of any derailleur. MTB shifters have barrel adjusters integrated, but gravel and road shifters do not, so the barrel adjuster is part of the derailleur on gravel or road bikes. There are 2x2 configurations for the Jab derailleur:
- Without barrel adjuster. Select this if you are pairing the derailleur with a MTB shifter. This configuration has 2 cable routing paths to accommodate a range of MTB frames.
- With barrel adjuster. Select this option if you are pairing with a gravel or road shifter. This configuration has 2 cable routing paths to accommodate a range of gravel and road frames.
Chains
- The derailleur is compatible with 12, 11, 10, 9, and 8 speed chains, including T-Type chains and flat-top chains.
