Tips and Tricks Video

This video shows the cage installation steps.

Steps

Clean the derailleur.

Set the cage lock.

Remove the SRAM M4 cage stop screw.

Wearing leather gloves, unlock the cage lock and slowly release the preload on the cage torsion spring.

Remove the M5 flat head screw to remove the cage.

Remove the circular black plastic spacer from under the cage.

Remove the torsion spring from the clutch housing.

Clean the parts.

Coat the spring in grease.

Install the spring, making sure to engage the tip of the spring in the small hole inside clutch housing.

Install the circular black plastic spacer with the tip of the spring fitting through the small hole.

Apply thread locking compound to a M5 flat head screw.

Locate the outer cage plate so that the tip of the spring fits through the small hole.

Install the M5 flat head screw to attach the cage.

Wearing leather gloves, slowly apply preload to the cage. The direction to wind the cage is counter-clock-wise (when viewing the derailleur as if you are looking at it when installed on a bike).

It will rotate approximately 1 to 1.5 turns, and then you can set the cage lock to hold the cage in place.

Apply thread locking compound to the SRAM M4 cage stop screw.

Install the SRAM M4 cage stop screw.

Apply grease liberally to all 4 bearing seals (of 2 pulleys), then install the dust shields.

Wipe off all excess grease from the pulleys, including the inside hole through the center of the bearings.

Apply thread locking compound to the 4 threaded holes on the inner cage plate.

Attach the inner cage plate to the outer cage.

Install a M3 flat head screw and black plastic cage spacer.

Install the lower pulley and M5 flat head screw.

Now the derailleur is ready to be installed on the bike, because the chain can be routed though the cage without breaking the chain.

If you are not directly installing the derailleur on a bike, you can finish installing the remaining parts.

After the chain is routed, install the upper pulley and M5 flat head screw.

Then install the lower M3 flat head screw and bushing.

Done!
